Rotherham’s ‘Picture This’ project is taken directly from and inspired by the National Gallery’s country wide scheme ‘Take One Picture’. We are hugely grateful to the National Gallery’s Education Department who have provided us with support, guidance and encouragement in launching our own localised version of their project back in 2007/08 using the George and the Dragon Artwork. The challenge is to use the pictures imaginatively in classrooms as a stimulus for creative work in areas such as literacy, mathematics, ICT, art, music, history, dance and drama.
The artwork for this project is entitled ‘Surprised! Tiger in a Tropical Storm’ by French post-impressionist Henri Rousseau. It was painted in 1891 and forms part of a large collection of oil paintings which include a number of jungle themed pieces. This painting is currently part of the National Gallery collection in London. The Gallery have very kindly given us permission to use the image for this years project.
The new painting for the 2012 will be revealed at the opening ceremony of the Exhibition at Magna and the launch will also take place at Magna on Wednesday 29th June as a full day event and will include a series of taster workshop sessions.
